Laurence & Margaret

Laurence & Margaret

Laurence and Margaret Emmitt were already committed Christians and regular churchgoers when they came to Loughborough in 1977. They started going to Emmanuel Church to Worship God. They were impressed by the warm welcome. They joined a house-group, and soon felt part of that church. At that time, the younger of their two daughters was just a baby. They would take it in turns to go to Church, whilst the other stayed at home baby-sitting.  One Sunday Margaret said she was going to try the little church up the hill. She came back very excited. “It is just like the church of my childhood. They need a Sunday School Leader and I have volunteered!” Thus, St.Mary-in-Charnwood became their principal place of Worship.

At St.Mary-in-Charnwood for many years, they led the Children’s Groups. Today they host and lead a house-group. In 1997, Laurence was licensed as a Reader. He leads Worship and Preaches on a regular basis. He enjoys the full range of Services at St. Mary’s from the tradition Matins and Evensong to the All Age family services. He is particularly pleased that the church makes full use of the Church of England book of Common Worship.

Despite their commitment to St.Mary-in-Charnwood, Margaret and Laurence have maintained their friendships with the people of Emmanuel Church, today, principally through the Parish Walking Group. They also take an interest in the wider church across the town. Laurence serves as Treasurer for Churches Together in Loughborough.
