Emmanuel received the Eco-Congregation Award (which lasts for 3 years) in June 2006.
In seeking to be an effective Eco-Congregation, Emmanuel aims to transform unjust structures in society and strives to safeguard the integrity of creation.
February 2008 was 'Environment Month' at Emmanuel. The sermons explored a Christian understanding of the place of the environment in the scheme of things - you can hear them for 3, 10 and 17 February here. We carried out a transport survey, to see where people travelled from, and how they got to church. From the 270 people who responded 179 came by car, travelling 362 car miles. 80 walked an average distance of 1mile. We also produced a Food Note, summarising the ethical and other choices available today and suggesting, especially for families, a priority rating of the different criteria, which could be fun. Download the Note here. For a summary of how to lighten your environmental load a little, see these Notes.
We have undertaken an energy audit,
and are carrying out a resource input and waste audit. A
suggestions sheet for thinking through the selection and purchase of
food can be downloaded HERE.
An environment festival day held in September 2005 brought together a large number of environmental groups and demonstrated sustainable technologies. A special children's choir concert with a creation and environment theme, Wonderful Earth, was held on Saturday 7th October 2006.
Eco-Congregation aims to encourage churches to celebrate the gift of God's creation and to care for it in their life and mission and through the members' personal lifestyle.
Emmanuel also supports A Rocha, a Christians in Conservation charity.
