The story of Emmanuel Church is not primarily a story of buildings. It is a story of God and His people. But as is so often the case, a building has, to a greater or lesser extent, been a focus in which God’s people meet to pray, worship, serve others, seek God’s heart and enjoy fellowship.
Work began on Emmanuel Church building on October 1835 and was completed just under two years later, at a cost of £7,000. Initially seating 1,203 people, it has undergone many changes over the years; not least a major extension in 1909, the addition of a church hall a hundred yards away in the 1950’s, an internal rearrangement and redecoration in 1965 and a development project in the early 1990’s which led to the addition of the current Church Centre, the removal of pews and complete internal reordering.
The current facilities are home to a wide range of expressions of Christian community, from church services to small groups, concerts to conferences and youth work to work with the homeless.
